Ok with boots, I usually spend like 15 min in the bathtub or sink with an old toothbrush scrubbing all mud of them. As far as BDU's fading I wash mine separately from all others that way the color stays with them and on a cold/cold cycle. Gear wise I still scrub it with that same toothbrush as my boots, haven't found an easier way yet.

On my gear I usually use a plastic just all-purpose brush that you would use to clean the bathroom/kitchen/etc. I just get the gear wet with some hot water and scrub it off and let it air dry. If I need to get into the little nooks and crannies then I use an old tooth brush. Same with boots, just hot water and a brush. Wash your uniforms on their own in cold water like Vito said, also, letting them air dry helps keep the color in.

Something I've found to work over the years is that if you have mud just caked on really think to your boots or vest, let it dry for a day or two, and then the majority of it you can just beat off or pick off. Then you can clean further with the brushes and water.

You can wash them with whatever you want, but some fabrics will suck the color out of other clothes so your choice.
